Why Crystal-Free Microdermabrasion is Better for You

Why Crystal Free Microdermabrasion

Crystal-Free Microdermabrasion is better for your skin because it’s gentler on the skin. This type of facial is a newer version of the traditional microdermabrasion facial, without the downtime, and without it being harsh on the skin, while still achieving wonderful results! But what exactly is a microdermabrasion facial?

What is a microdermabrasion facial?

Abrasion of the skin has been around since the early Egyptian days. As a result of the skin physiology research by Dr. Peter Pugliese, it helped take aesthetics and microdermabrasion to the next level. His education of the skin properties and training helped us understand the benefits of a microdermabrasion facial. The treatment has many benefits including softening fine lines, reduction in hyper-pigmentation, and smoother skin. The ultimate result is glowing, healthy skin.

Microdermabrasion is a method of exfoliation with machines created in the early ’80s. Back in the day, the latest in skin exfoliation was this “sandblasting machine”. It removes the upper layers of dead skin cells from the face allowing for better penetration of serums and peptides into the skin. The abrasion forces the skin to rebuild collagen. Back in the day, the machines were closed-looped, which meant that the abraded skin cells went into the crystals. But the machines had throwaway canisters that contained the dead skin (yuk). When treatment was complete, we would throw away the canister.

As a result of old technology, the crystals were aluminum dioxide or there might have been a diamond wand used. If not performed properly, the wand could damage capillaries and the crystals could cause damage to the skin. That is old technology.

What Are The Different Types of Microdermabrasion?

There are three main types of microdermabrasion.

Crystal Microdermabrasion:

The original machines blasted out aluminum oxide crystals from a wand. The crystals came from one side of the machine and the exfoliated skin was deposited into a canister. Other crystals that were popular at the time included salt and baking soda, but the aluminum oxide crystals were the most popular. The exfoliation process was controlled by the number of passes made on the skin. The downside of crystal microdermabrasion is that you can not use it on clients with sensitive skin or anyone with visible capillaries. The other problem with crystal microdermabrasion is the vacuum suction can create damage to the skin if not used by a skilled esthetician.

Diamond-Tip Microdermabrasion:

Later came the diamond-tip microdermabrasion which used the world’s hardest gem to abrade the skin. While this method has grown in popularity, it does not use crystals. It has the same vacuum technology, but the tip is exfoliating the skin. While more comfortable than crystal microdermabrasion, there is still the vacuum suction that can cause damage to the skin.

Ultrasonic or Crystal-Free Microdermabrasion

Ultrasonic peeling technology uses a handpiece skin scrubber spatula. When the spatula is excited by an electrical current it emits vibrations. These rapid vibrations (27,000 per second) force the dead skin cells and skin debris to loosen. This results in deeply cleansed skin and a deep, yet gentle exfoliation. This type of exfoliation is 3-fold as it removes the dead skin cells, deep pore cleanses, and hydrates the tissue. Ultrasonic microdermabrasion or skin peeling by using a skin scrubber spatula provides a less aggressive method of skin exfoliation vs crystal microdermabrasion.

Additionally, it can be used on all skin types, even rosacea, sensitivity, and acne skins. The esthetician can control the speed, frequency, and number of passes with this treatment.

What Are the Benefits of Crystal-Free Microdermabrasion?

Gone are the days of canisters, sandblasting, and pain. The new ultrasonic peel facial actually has many, many benefits:

  • No pain because the skin abrasion is done ultrasonically.
  • Less trauma to the skin with much better results. The dead skin vibrates off the skin. It abrades the skin ultrasonically. (super cool)
  • Because of less damage to the skin,  it builds collagen and elasticity easier. This process releases serums in the skin which re-hydrate the skin.
  • Ultrasonic peeling also aids in the absorption of serums into the skin.
  • Removal of dead skin cells reveals softer and brighter skin.
  • Can be performed every 28 days. Is a great add-on to other skin treatments because it is not so invasive.
  • The new Ultrasonic peeling Microdermabrasion Facial is used to treat pigmentation, light scarring, sun damage. It is excellent in the treatment of “blackhead” acne.
  • The skin is gently sanded ultrasonically to remove the outer layers, revealing newer skin.

What is Collagen?

Collagen is a protein within the skin and as science and the study of skin treatments have advanced, we don’t want to “thin” the skin as we grow older. By the use vitamins and treatments like the new Microderm Facial, the aestheticians at Bella Reina Spa insure that your collagen production increases. This will leave you with radiant, smoother, and younger-looking skin.
